New Hasbro & Universal movies:

Working with Universal, Hasbro has lined up big screen versions of the Ouija board.

Board games might seem like a wet Sunday afternoon kinda thing, but Hollywood is hoping there is some movie mileage in a crossover between films and the family favourites. Toy company Hasbro has peddled traditional movie tie-in toys for years, with Transformers, Spider-Man and Star Wars providing big pay-days.

But it’s looking for a new direction and wants films to copy games, rather than the other way round. Working with Universal, Hasbro has already lined up big screen versions of Candy Land and Ouija, while Ridley Scott has announced plans to direct a Monopoly movie. What – no Scrabble?

This new venture gives Hasbro greater control over the use of their brands and according to their chief executive, Brian Golner, is a way to “reinvent” its decades old games. But is there a market for board game-based movies? Clue, an 80s film riffing on the popular who-dunnit game, Cluedo was a box office flop, and already questions are being raised.

David Klein, the senior director of the New York Film Academy has his doubts: “There are three basic elements to any story,” he says. “There needs to be a heroic character; there needs to be an objector and there needs to be conflict. Those three things don’t necessarily exist in most board games.” Richard Walter, a screenwriting professor at UCLA, adds that he finds “it depressing to think that someone someday is going to actually utter the words, “Let’s go see the movie Monopoly.”

But more importantly, who will they cast to play the moustachioed Monopoly man?

Ghost hunting - 4 lessons:

Lesson No. 1: Don't believe what you see on TV. Ghost hunting is boring. There is no traipsing loudly through cemeteries. No spooky séances. No startling at every sound.

Real ghost hunting requires hours of sitting in silence and a skeptical mind, explains Jan Gregory, founder of Vancouver Paranormal, to her students. They have gathered in a dark house on a Thursday evening for a four-hour crash course on the basics of tracking and detecting paranormal activity.

Ms. Gregory has little regard for ghost-hunting television shows in which paranormal investigators holler for ghosts to show themselves and raise alarm at any strange noise for dramatic effect. But the popularity of shows such as Most Haunted, Paranormal State, Ghost Hunters and Ghost Trackers has proven to be a double-edged sword for real-life ghost hunters.

Vancouver Paranormal, which considers itself one of Canada's largest paranormal investigative groups, began offering courses this month, covering everything from ghost-hunting etiquette to recording EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena). The lessons take place at the purportedly haunted home of senior Vancouver Paranormal investigator Marlena Fairbourne. Situated in a suburban neighbourhood of Richmond, B.C., her house has been remodelled to look like a medieval lair - gothic antiques everywhere, stained glass on all the windows. It seems an apt location for discussions about otherworldly phenomena.

Lesson No. 2:

Ninety-eight per cent of things that go bump in the night can be fixed with a hammer or a screwdriver. A good ghost hunter explores all possible rational explanations for strange occurrences: rusty hinges, faulty electrical wiring, even mental illness and alcohol- or drug-induced hallucinations.

"We're not doing anyone any favours going around saying everything's a ghost," Ms. Gregory says. In one case, the group's investigators failed in repeated attempts at photographing a child's handprint that could nevertheless be plainly seen on the ceiling of a new apartment complex in Delta, B.C. On another investigation, members of the group watched as a stool followed an eight-year-old girl around the kitchen in her Chilliwack, B.C., home "like a dog," Ms. Gregory says.

Lesson No. 3:

Never go alone on a ghost hunt. Having company makes good safety sense, Ms. Gregory says, since ghost hunting often requires walking through cemeteries and empty properties at night. It also means there will be multiple witnesses to corroborate your story.

Vancouver neuroscientist Nina, 31, may have to hunt solo. She asked to withhold her full name for fear of mockery from her colleagues. She enrolled in the $100 class because she was intrigued by Vancouver Paranormal's reserved and methodical approach. "I'm very open-minded. I want to bring some legitimacy to this field," Nina says, adding that she has been interested in the paranormal ever since she was a child. Nina says she used to play Ouija with her father but has learned that trying to summon spirits is a no-no.

Lesson No. 4:

Ghost hunting is passive. Although séances and Ouija are commonly shown on television, Vancouver Paranormal discourages them, lest they disturb unknown forces, Ms. Gregory says. Similarly, she adds, "It's never okay to challenge or dare a spirit. Be polite at all times." As the tutorial draws to a close and the shadows in Ms. Fairbourne's house grow eerier, Ms. Gregory reminds the class of one of the most important lessons of good ghost hunting. "Take everything with a grain of salt," she says, "including what I say."

About the Ouija Board:

A Ouija board has a flat surface which printed with letters, numbers, and other symbols. A planchette or movable indicator is used as a pointer.

Usually an ouija board has two arced rows of letters, one above the other. Often the upper row goes from A to M, and the lower row runs from N to Z. Below these is a row with numbers One through Zero. On the upper left of the ouija board is the word Yes, and at the upper right, the word No. Close to the bottom of the ouija board is Goodbye. A tiny three legged heart-shaped device rests on the board, which moves smoothly over the board's surface. The fingers of 2 participants are placed on the planchette that then moves about the board, purportedly on its own power, to spell out messages.

The ouija board does not have a straightforward history, there are several varied hypotheses.

At the end of the nineteenth century the first genuine ouija board was invented. There is significant disagreement as to who actually invented the ouija board - names brought up include Elijah Bond, E.C. Reiche and Charles Kennard.

The first patent for the Modern class of talking boards was registered in 1890 and listed Elijah Bond as the inventor with Charles W. Kennard and William H. A. Maupin as assignees.

Charles Kennard and associates set up the Kennard Novelty Company and began to produce and sell ouija boards commercially. The rights to ouija board production were sold to Parker Brothers who own them to date. It is interesting - if not slightly dismaying - to think that what began as an instrument for spiritualists, psychics and mediums can be bought today as a children´s toy.

Ouija Board Dangers?:

Most paranormal researchers advise against the casual use of the ouija board, suggesting that it can be a doorway to unknown dimensions.

“The ouija board itself is not dangerous, but the form of communication that you are attempting often is," says Ghost researcher Dale Kaczmarek of the Ghost Research Society.

"Most often the spirits whom are contacted through the Ouija are those whom reside on 'the lower astral plane.' These spirits are often very confused and may have died a violent or sudden death; murder, suicide, etc. Therefore, many violent, negative and potentially dangerous conditions are present to those using the ouija board. Often times several spirits will attempt to come through at the same time but the real danger lies when you ask for physical proof of their existence!

You might say, 'Well, if you're really a spirit, then put out this light or move that object!' What you have just done is simple, you have 'opened a doorway' and allowed them to enter into the physical world and future problems can and often do arise."

But what if the ouija really does not contact spirits? What if it only accesses our own subconscious? The advice might be the same. Since there are realativly few accounts of positive, uplifting experiences with the ouija board, and many negative ones, we might assume that it more attuned to the negative aspects of our subconscious.

If you're determined to use the ouija anyway, it is highly recommended that you follow some rules of precaution:

Begin by announcing that the session will only allow an experience that is positive or toward a higher good and that negative energies are not welcome. Don't ask for physical signs. When you're done, close the board. This is an important step. When you're done with your session, slide the planchette to 'GOODBYE' and remove your hands.

Ouija Board History:

The interest for the mysterious ouija board has persisted for over 100 years. The ouija devotees range from collectors of antique boards to true believers in its mystical powers.

The history of the Ouija board isn't straightforward, there are various different theories.

The basic concepts behind the ouija board - a "talking board" for psychics or spiritualists - have been around for many centuries. However the first modern ouija boards came into being on the back of the spiritualism boom of the late nineteenth century.

Many mediums during that period undertook "automatic writing" whereby a message was written down by them, purportedly under the direction of a spirit.

The Ouija Planchette

An early forerunner of the ouija board was, so legend has it, invented in the 1850s by a Frenchman by the name of Planchette. This talking board was a small wooden table with pencils attached that wrote as it moved. Some people have cast doubt on the origin of this device, not least because the name "Planchette" (which means "little plank") seems too good to be true.

Who Invented the Ouija Board? The first real ouija board was invented towards the end of the nineteenth century. There is considerable disagreement as to who actually invented it - names mentioned include Elijah Bond, E.C. Reiche and Charles Kennard. The first patent for the new form of talking board was filed in 1890 and listed Elijah Bond as the inventor with Charles W. Kennard and William H. A. Maupin as assignees.

Charles Kennard and associates formed the Kennard Novelty Company and began to produce and sell ouija boards commercially.

In 1966 the rights to ouija board production were sold to Parker Brothers who retain them to this day. It is interesting - if slightly depressing - to think that what began as a tool for spiritualists, psychics and mediums you can today buy over the net as a glow-in-the-dark children's toy.

The history of the Ouija board isn’t straightforward, there are various different theories.

The basic concepts behind the ouija board – a “talking board” for psychics or spiritualists – have been around for many centuries. However the first modern ouija boards came into being on the back of the spiritualism boom of the late nineteenth century.

Many mediums during that period undertook “automatic writing” whereby a message was written down by them, purportedly under the direction of a spirit.

The Ouija Planchette

An early forerunner of the ouija board was, so legend has it, invented in the 1850s by a Frenchman by the name of Planchette. This talking board was a small wooden table with pencils attached that wrote as it moved. Some people have cast doubt on the origin of this device, not least because the name “Planchette” (which means “little plank”) seems too good to be true.

Who Invented the Ouija Board?

The first real ouija board was invented towards the end of the nineteenth century. There is considerable disagreement as to who actually invented it – names mentioned include Elijah Bond, E.C.

It is interesting – if slightly depressing – to think that what began as a tool for spiritualists, psychics and mediums you can today buy over the net as a glow-in-the-dark children’s toy.

About the powers and realities of the Ouija board:

There is an ongoing debate about the powers and realities of the Ouija board. Essentially, there are three basic positions regarding the Ouija board: 1 - it is dangerous; 2 - only dangerous if used with evil intent; 3 - it is harmless.

1 - The Ouija is inherently dangerous, can open portals to evil entities and should never be used.
2 - The Ouija is only dangerous if used with evil intent, but can be a useful tool for spirit mediumship if used properly and with good intent.
3 - The Ouija is inherently harmless and has no real powers of mediumship for good or evil; its effects, if any, are only psychological in nature.

Which is true? Talk to any group of people and you’ll find strong proponents for each argument. A few years ago, Steven Wagner conducted a survey of readers on this subject. It results showed that 65 percent of those who responded felt the Ouija was dangerous, and 35% felt it was harmless.

Ghost hunters about the ouija board:

If you're thinking that a Ouija board, marketed for years as a parlor game by Parker Brothers, is too trivial for a serious group, think again. For paranormal investigators, it is a serious matter.

Meet the Texas Society of Paranormal Investigators. The meeting room at the back of the Gander Mountain outdoor outfitter store on the Eastex Freeway was crowded on a recent Saturday afternoon for a meeting of the Texas Society of Paranormal Investigators. The group, formed with the aid of an online meet-up site, began in early 2008 and is dedicated to the scientific investigation of things that go bump in the night – the world of spirits, hauntings and unexplained phenomena.

Except for the TSPI logo and box of cupcakes topped with a cartoon ghost, there is nothing to distinguish the members of this group as particularly out of the ordinary. One couple also raises miniature show goats; another guy sports a "Jay & Silent Bob" t-shirt. Part of the discussion this night concerns details of upcoming Halloween and Christmas parties. Their common purpose, however, is an interest in the paranormal.

Group leader Don Dennis is a burly truck driver who organized TSPI to conduct investigations. He points out the fact there is safety in numbers as one of his motives for starting it.

"You never want to do this by yourself as a safety factor," said Dennis. He traced his interest in the paranormal to "a couple of different experiences I had when I was younger."

Dennis stresses that his group exists to undertake serious investigations, often on behalf of property owners seeking explanations for things that may be beyond conventional wisdom.

"Like the guy who wants to know why plates are flying across his kitchen," he said by way of example. The TSPI manual contains a list of "The Official Standards and Protocols" that covers a range of topics. Some are basic, from "Respect private property, ask permission and do not trespass" to "Show reverence and respect in cemeteries, battlefields, historic sites, etc." to "No running or horseplay at any site you are investigating."

Other protocols seem a little more exotic, including "Ask the spirits of the dead for permission to take their photos or to record their voices" and "Avoid shooting when foreign objects are floating near the camera lens."

One curious standard says: "We do not consider Ouija boards, dowsing rods, crystals or séances valid investigation tools."

If you're thinking that a Ouija board marketed for years as a parlor game by Parker Brothers, is too trivial for a serious group, think again. For paranormal investigators, it is a serious matter.

"I will tell everybody flat out, if I find out you've been playing with one or that's what you're into – (you're) gone," said Dennis when asked about Ouija boards. "The reason being that you have no control – if they actually do work – usually when you have some type of demonic activity, you can trace it back to somewhere in that time a séance or Ouija board was brought into play. That's why I don't play with them."

The question of demons called to mind another point. On the meet-up Web site, it allows users to click on other members and see what related topics interest them. An initial scan showed a number of those who signed up also expressed interest in topics including Wicca, pagans, and goddesses, to name three. A few days later, those members had disappeared from the site.

"I purged them," said Dennis. "If that's what you're into, that's fine. But that's not for our group … Because of their worship of spirits or whatever, some of them were in our group to find out places for them to go. I don't put up with that."

This caution is understandable, considering another protocol from the manual: "If someone is angry, they should not be involved with an investigation. They could draw angry spirits and the other spirits will avoid them."

Dennis says such contingencies are always a consideration when dealing with the paranormal.

"There is a possibility, a very slim possibility, say you have a thousand claims of paranormal activity, you may get one that's even close to a demonic," he said.
